Choosing The Right Limits At Full Tilt Poker

Money management is essential for any player that wants to consistently win money from the Full Tilt Poker tables.

If you cannot control which stakes you play at you will have a very hard time winning money, as risking too much of your money at one time will cause you to consistently lose, no matter how good you might be.

To help give you an idea of basic money management at Full Tilt, I will give you a few guidelines on which stakes and limits you should play at if you want to be able to withdraw more money than you deposit every single time. This rules may seem a little tough at first, but you really have to stick to them if you want to win money.

No Limit cash game money management.

In Texas Hold'em cash games, the standard maximum buy-in is usually 100 times the size of the big blind. If you want to play at safe enough stakes to ensure that you do not go broke:

  • You should have at least 20 buy-ins for the stakes that you would like to play at.

This means that if you have a bankroll of $1000, you should look to play at the 25c/50c tables, because these have a max buy in of $50. Therefore you have 20 buy-ins exactly for this level. This may seem harsh, but during a bad run of cards this is a necessary cushion to ensure that you do not end up going broke.

Limit cash game money management.

Limit cash games such as Limit Texas Hold'em do not generally have maximum buy-ins, as the amount each player can bet and raise is restricted. Therefore the advised rules of Full Tilt money management for limit games is:

  • You should have at least 300 big bets for the stakes that you would like to play at.

The money managements rules for limit are less strict because of the fact that you will experience smaller swings in limit than you would in no limit games. So for example, if you want to play in the $1/$2 (the "big bet" is $2) limit Texas Hold'em games, you should have a bankroll of at least $600.

Sit and Go money management.

Sit and Go's are some of the most popular Full Tilt tournaments, which means that there is plenty of soft competition lying around. If you use the following money management rule you should do just fine:

  • You should have at least 40 buy-ins for Sit and Go tournaments.

You can have big winning streaks and you can have big losing streaks, so having a healthy bankroll that can survive through runs of bad luck in tournaments will prove to be very useful.

Multi-table tournament money management.

These big tournaments offer big wins to players, but they are a lot harder to finish highly in. Therefore the following is recommended as far as money management goes for MTT's.

  • You should have at least 60 buy-ins for multi-table tournaments.

The fact that the fields are so much bigger in MTT's than Sit and Go tournaments means that you me well see much bigger swings. So, to cushion this variance I would advise that you have at least 60 buy-ins for the level of MTT tournaments that you would like to play in. It may seem like a lot, but you will be thankful for it the next time you are on an unlucky streak.

Important Full Tilt money management points.

  • You will not win money with money management unless you are a winning player.
  • You should avoid going on tilt as much as possible.
  • You should be prepared to move limits as your bankroll moves up and down.
  • Enjoy the time you spend playing poker.

It is important to note that if you are a losing poker player, money management is not going to magically turn you into a winning one. Nonetheless, having good knowledge of money management is not going to do you any harm for the future.

If you can avoid going on tilt and move down limits if your bankroll drops below the guidelines, you will be avoiding two of the major pitfalls for when it comes to looking after your poker money. The last thing you want to do is spend ages building up a steady bankroll, only to lose large chunks of it due to a few wild moments. So try and keep on top of your game as much as possible.

Also, enjoy yourself at the table! Money management doesn't make the game less entertaining, it just keeps your bankroll safe and allows you to safely win money. That should be enough to keep a smile on your face! The longer you can play for, the more Full Tilt points you can build up, which is an added incentive to avoid going broke at the room.
